First Takes, First Impressions—Downtown San Jose's Bold New Brew

Artisan coffee, Korean-inspired salted breads, and specialty drinks served steps from San Jose City Hall.

About Us

Tucked into the historic core at 76 E Santa Clara Street, The F1rst Take brings Seoul’s artisan bakery culture to Silicon Valley’s front door. Each morning our bakers pull trays of salted milk bread—crispy, golden crusts yielding to plush, butter-laced centers that regulars swear rival anything in Gangnam. Behind the counter, baristas craft seasonal drinks with house-made brown-sugar syrups and single-origin espresso pulled on a matte-black Slayer machine. The space itself is industrial-luxe: raw brick, matte black steel, and warm oak communal tables that fill with coders on deadlines and couples meeting for weekend cortados. Whether you’re craving an iced oat-milk brown-sugar latte or a warm loaf to take home, The F1rst Take delivers the first bite—and the first sip—that makes you want seconds.

What We Offer

Our espresso bar turns out silky cortados, velvety flat whites, and rotating single-origin pour-overs. Signature drinks include the fan-favorite Brown Sugar Oatmilk Latte and a honey-cinnamon cold brew finished with toasted marshmallow cold foam. The bakery case features daily batches of salted milk bread, black-sesame croissants, and matcha custard buns. Grab-and-go retail shelves stock whole-bean coffee roasted in small lots, house-made syrups, and bento-style lunch boxes for the weekday crowd. Need a meeting space? Reserve our rear nook table—seats six with outlets and complimentary Wi-Fi.

"The food and drinks are ok, but not worth the price and wait"

"I ordered the Brown Sugar drink, but it came with only fresh milk and brown sugar. The item picture shows boba included, so I assumed the drink came with boba. This should be made clearer, because showing an ingredient in the picture that is not included is misleading. I paid $7.25 and ended up with just milk and brown sugar, which was disappointing."

"I really enjoyed The F1rst Take! The salted bread was so delicious — crispy on the outside, soft and buttery inside. I’ve traveled to Korea before and tried artisan bakeries in Seoul, and this bread honestly reminded me of that same style and texture. It feels very fresh and carefully made. I also tried the Cococha, and it was so refreshing. The combination of fresh coconut water and matcha was light, clean, and unique — not too sweet, but very flavorful. Such a cute new spot with high-quality drinks and pastries. Definitely worth trying!"

"Came on Thursday around lunchtime. Loved the atmosphere and decor! Lo-fi music was perfect low-key vibe. The bread is pretty good as well! It doesn't have the crunch that salt breads are known for, but the filling was so yummy I ended up getting a sweet and savory one!"

"Their bread is just okay - not too bad, not that good. But the waiting line is so long. I’d say this shop isn’t really professional at making coffee (it’s like milk tea but not as good as actual milk tea), and their bread isn’t that great either (not as good as a proper salt bread). It feels like they opened up without really perfecting or making any single thing on their menu truly compelling. The interior is a bit bare-bones too, though the ads on their digital screens are actually pretty well done - which is honestly why I came in the first place"

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your signature drinks come with boba?

Our Brown Sugar Oatmilk Latte does not include boba by default. If you’d like chewy tapioca pearls added, just ask—it’s an extra $1.

Is there seating or is this takeout only?

We have a bright front window bar and a cozy six-seat nook in the back—first come, first served. Large groups can reserve the nook by calling ahead.

Do you offer Wi-Fi and power outlets?

Yes—free high-speed Wi-Fi and ample outlets along the communal tables make us a favorite among downtown freelancers and students.

Are any pastries nut-free or gluten-free?

Our salted milk bread and classic croissants contain gluten. We usually stock at least two gluten-free items daily; check the case tags or ask our staff.

What time do you open on weekends?

We open at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday to catch early risers headed to the nearby farmers’ market.

Can I place a large bread order for an event?

Absolutely. Call or DM us on Instagram 24 hours ahead for loaves, croissants, or assorted pastry boxes.
